A
writer and painter living in St. John's, Newfoundland, Owen says his art
has been influenced primarily by the European and American Impressionists,
by
the Canadian Group of Seven, and his own imagination. His paintings are
built
from experience —the memories of walking through snowy woods, the river
after the spring thaw, or the vibrant colours of the changing seasons.
Born and raised in Riverhead, St. Mary's Bay, Owen worked in construction before studying education at Memorial University. In the absence of formal art teachers, Owen taught drawing and painting on various levels in elementary and high school. In recent years, Owen has been painting full-time.
Owen’s paintings are in many private collections. His works have been exhibited at the St. John’s Arts and Culture Centre, Cynthia Noel Art Gallery, and in shows of Visual Artists of Newfoundland and Labrador, and Art Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
More recently, Owen has pursued creative writing. He has had a short story published in the Newfoundland anthology, Savoury on the Tongue. He has also won a 2006 short fiction award at the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Competition for his short story Travels With a Patient Lady.
Owen’s
current ambition is to become more skilled as a painter by improving his
use of design elements and principles.
He
also intends to publish
more of his writing.
